After you’ve written your resume, you will want to check the design and content before sending it to any employers.
- Use your word processor’s spell checking to check for misspelled words before letting anyone review your resume
- Have a friend who knows the grammar rules read through your resume to check for grammatical errors
- Have someone who knows how to write an effective resume proofread your resume and look for awkward phrases and misspelled words
If you resume will be scanned into an employer’s database, follow these rules for printing your resume.
- Don’t use colored paper. Make sure the resume paper you are using if white or off-white.
- Use standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
- Do not fold or staple your resume.
- Do not use double-sided printing.
- Make sure the font is between 10 to 14 points. If it is larger or smaller the scanner will have a hard time reading the text.
- Avoid lines, graphics, and shading.
- Use one (and only one!) non-decorative font. Avoid italicizing and underlining.
