Finding the job you want can be a difficult proposition. Once you find the job, getting the job can be even harder. Follow these steps to get the job you want!
Finding Job Openings
There are plenty of places to find job openings. The thing to keep in mind is that it is all about who you know and who knows you. Start your job search by contacting people you know who work at companies you would like to work for and ask them if they know of any openings. If they do (and they like you), you already have a great reference when you apply for the job.
If you attended college, you make want to check with the college alumni network or career center. Colleges and Universities usually have resources to help their former students find employment.
You might have an idea of where you want to work already. For example, if a career at Nike has always been your dream, contact Nike's human resource department or visit its website to find out if there are any openings you are qualified for.
Other places that you should check for job openings include classified ads in newspapers, professional journals, and trade magazines, internet job listings, state employment offices, the federal government, professional associations, labor unions, employment agencies, career consultants, and community agencies. For example, you could search the job search engine at TheJobSpider.com, for job openings. If you are diligent you are bound to find the job you want.
Job Application Process
After you have found a job you will need to apply for it. Usually the listing will include the application process. Common requirements are a resume, cover letter, and application. A cover letter should always accompany a resume or application and should include the position you are applying for, where you found the listing, why you are qualified, and how you can be reached to schedule an interview. ASK FOR THE INTERVIEW!
The First Interview
The first interview is a chance for the employer to get to know you and determine if you are qualified for the position. You should come prepared with knowledge of the company. Also, you need to be able to explain how you are qualified for the position. The questions in the first interview are usually broad questions and based on the resume you submitted. Be prepared to explain your work experience.
Also, make sure you are well groomed. You should dress your best! Make sure to bring another copy of your resume and a list of references. The Resume Templates Premium Package includes an Interview Guide that will help you with your preparation.
Follow-up Interviews
If you impressed the interviewer with your qualifications during the first interview, you will probably be invited back for a second interview. This is usually an opportunity for other employees to meet and evaluate your personality. During the follow-up interviews the interviewers will decide if you are a good fit for the company.
The Job Offer
Once you have been offered a job, you need to evaluate whether or not it will meet your needs. When considering an offer, you should consider the following items:
- Salary and Cost of Living
- Benefits
- The Organization
- The Position
