Turning Seasonal Work into a Career

Seasonal employment is as traditional as pumpkin pie and Christmas lights. Almost all retailers need to hire seasonal employees to keep up with the increased demand in November and December.
Working these seasonal jobs is a great way for you to get your foot in the door with employers. Not only do you have a chance to check out the retail world and see if you like it, but you also have a chance to make a great impression and turn your temporary job into a permanent one.
In order to flip the seasonal job into a career position, you need to start planning today. Decide what companies you want to work for permanently, and go pick up an application. When it’s time for your interview, make a great impression by bringing a resume along. Finally, tell the employer that you may be interested in a permanent position in the future.
During the interview, find out whether or not permanent employment is even an opportunity. Ask if the company plans on evaluating your work as a seasonal employee and whether or not it typically brings seasonal workers on in a permanent role. You will be able to determine from these questions whether or not you will have an opportunity with the company in the future.
Once you have the position, it’s time to prove yourself. Work hard. Be friendly. Demonstrate that you’re reliable. Go the extra mile. You’ve heard it a million times, but it’s more important now than ever. You have to make the employer want to keep you around.
When the Christmas season is over ask the supervisor how you can apply for a permanent position. You might have to interview for the position again, but if you’ve made a great impression, you have a good chance of sticking around for the New Year.
