25 Tips for Writing a Winning Resume

1. Your resume should only be one page unless you have extensive experience
2. Use white space and balance to improve readability (should be 50% white space)
3. Prepare your resume from the audience's point of view
4. Use the job advertisement as a guide for your resume
5. Make sure that you show how your past experience has prepared you for the job for which you are applying
6. Use active verbs (received, participated) throughout and make sure not to change the verb tenses in the body of the resume
7. Use your experience and education to support your skills and objective
8. Include your full name, address, phone number, and email address
9. Don't include age, marital status or salary requirements
10. Include a brief objective or personal interest
11. List college degrees, schools, and locations
12. Employment should be listed in reverse chronological order (most recent or present employment first)
13. If you have an extensive employment history, you may want to limit your employment to positions that are relevant to the job you are applying for
14. After writing your resume, go through and eliminate unnecessary words
15. Be 100% correct with your spelling and grammar
16. Use white, off-white, or light beige high-quality paper
17. Avoid redundancy and repetition
18. Avoid periods
19. Avoid underlining
20. Avoid parentheses
21. Avoid uncommon pronouns, jargon, or acronyms
22. Avoid abbreviations
23. Don't use "I or My" in your resume (your name is at the top)
24. Save space by not including "references available upon request."
25. Print your resume on a high quality, laser printer
